PhD Scholarship

Trinity Business School invites applications for a funded full-time PhD scholarship. The scholarship comprises the cost of EU or Non-EU fees per year, and a stipend of €17,316 per annum for 4 years beginning in September 2021. The opportunity

This PhD scholarship is connected to the research project “Exploring the role of deliberative democracy for corporate sustainability”. This research project aims at exploring how firms can successfully manage the complexities and tensions associated with adopting sustainability as a strategic priority at the core of the organization. The underlying goal to create sustainable value for all stakeholders is connected to manifold tensions, as a strong interpretation of sustainability calls for managers to take economic, social and ecological dimensions into account simultaneously without trading these dimensions off against each other. While such a management approach is urgently needed to tackle the pressing sustainability challenges of our times, it is far less clear how this can be achieved in business practice.

Against this backdrop, this project sets out to analyse how leading strongly sustainable, de-/ postgrowth companies handle the managerial task of integrating multiple sustainability dimensions. In particular, this project aims at exploring the role of democratic decision-making and deliberation for this integration process. Recent research from organization and political science on deliberative democracy points to the efficacy of processes of deliberation, i.e. the joint communicative exchange and consideration of reasons, values and interests of all concerned, for the integration of different value perspectives and interests. The project employs state of the art qualitative-inductive research methods to collect and analyse primary as well as secondary data to develop a deeper understanding of the processes and activities involved in democratic organizing for strong corporate sustainability. Therefore, it provides the opportunity for the successful PhD candidate to work on a research project that includes the whole range of activities of rigorous and relevant qualitative research in management science geared towards the publication in widely respected international journals.

Trinity Business School takes PhD supervision very seriously. The successful PhD candidate will work closely with her or his supervisor who is the PI of this research project. The PhD candidate will take part in the structured PhD programme at Trinity Business School and will be supported as well as encouraged to attend international workshops and conferences. The PhD candidate will also have the opportunity to gain teaching experience and will collaborate closely with the supervisor. The successful PhD candidate will hence be part of a research process that aims at meeting the highest standards of the field providing a very solid foundation for a future scholarly career.

Anforderungsprofil

 Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will meet the following criteria:

  • Excellent academic track record in Social Sciences, in particular areas such as business ethics, sustainability, CSR, management & organization studies, political theory (A minimum of a 2.1 (or equivalent) undergraduate degree and a Master’s qualification in a relevant discipline are essential)
  • Competence in qualitative research methods
  • Experience in engaging with business practitioners
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Collaborative and proactive attitude
  • Fluency in English
  • Physical presence in Dublin is required at least for the first year, provided that the coronavirus pandemic allows for on-campus activities at Trinity College

Two-Step Application Process

First step: Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) via email with a single attachment file to Dr. Maximilian Schormair: maximilian.schormair@tcd.ie

State “EOI [your name] – TBS PhD Scholarship deliberative democracy and corporate sustainability” in the subject heading of the email.

The EOI shall comprise:

  • A cover letter that includes a brief statement of the applicant’s suitability
  • A brief research proposal not exceeding 750 words in length that fits within the broad project aims and objectives, and demonstrates some understanding of the area of research
  • A curriculum vitae, including a list of any published works, conference presentations and relevant work experience
  • A full statement of academic record, supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation (academic transcripts, degree certificate(s), certificate of English Language Competency if English is not the first language)
  • Two academic references

Submission deadline for EOI: 4. June 2021

Second step: Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed via Zoom or MS Teams. The interviews will be conducted in June 2021.
